Bringing Intelligence to Medicine
We are driven by the needs of our customers in a rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare technology
About Biormika
For individuals with medically refractory epilepsy, the widely accepted next step is surgical intervention such as removal of the brain tissue or electrical modulation of the seizure focus with an implanted device. Before surgery, many of these individuals need invasive monitoring with probes placed inside or on the surface of the brain to map out the seizure focus. Despite a thorough workup, surgical outcomes often turn out to be unfavorable due to lack of a definitive biomarker that allows precise determination of the boundaries of the seizure focus.
Since the early 2000s, certain abnormal EEG (electroencephalography) brain signals, known as HFOs (high frequency oscillations), have emerged as promising biomarkers for epilepsy. Many studies have shown that surgical removal of the brain tissue containing the HFOs could lead to surgical success, and therefore, a potential cure for epilepsy. This promise has yet to materialize in real life as it is challenging for the human eye to discern and process HFOs. For example, one estimate found that it took 10 hours for a human expert to scan a 10-minute, 10-channel EEG to visually identify the HFOs. This task is even more daunting when scaled up to the modern practice of epilepsy surgery, which often involves scanning 150 to 250 EEG channels. This is where Biormika offers a solution to bridge the gap.
Recognizing this need, we set out to develop an automated HFO detector combining our clinical experience, intellectual property ownership, technical expertise, and business insight. We built a cloud-based, SaaS (software-as-a-service) platform to deliver our solution via a web browser, eliminating open-source code implementation and device dependencies into the workflow. Our products are designed on a future-proof, enterprise-grade, secure, scalable cloud infrastructure for maximizing speed and efficiency while making them affordable for both individuals and institutions.
We are truly excited to share our Oscillyzer™ and StreamEEG™ products. You can try them out – for free and right away – as soon as you sign up. We invite you to be part of our innovation journey to treat epilepsy.
